The Unapologetic Woman feat. the works of the Late WANDA EWING – and Omaha artist Patty Talbert
THE UNAPOLOGETIC WOMAN
Featuring some of the works of the late artist Wanda Ewing and local artist Patty Talbert. Showcasing women’s essence as powerful, bold, unapologetic and a gift to all the world.
Words of Wanda Ewing: “I’m Wanda Ewing—printmaker, painter, collage and multimedia artist and latch hook maven. I’ve been making provocative art with a political edge in my Midwestern hometown since 1999. And to do that, you have to be tenacious as hell.” Photograph by Dana Damewood.
“She was an associate professor of art at the University of Nebraska in Omaha. She began teaching in 2005, leading courses in foundations and senior capstones for studio majors. Serving as a longtime member of the College Art Association. At the time of her death, she served on the Committee on Women in the Arts. As well as the Southern Graphics Council, where she was the International Board of Directors’ secretary.”
“Influenced by folk-art aesthetics and the depiction—and lack thereof—of African American women in popular culture, often with a biting, comical edge. Ewing’s best-known series included her pin-ups Black as Pitch, Hot as Hell, voluptuous clothing from The Summer I Wore Dresses, and faux magazine covers entitled Bougie. Her work has been included in exhibitions and purchased for collections throughout the world, and was reproduced in such publications as the Paris Review.” www.collegeart.org/obituaries/wandaewing
